FIFA 2026 Power Rankings — pre-tournament edition · refreshed after every matchday

There are 48 teams. Only one wins. Twenty-three will go home before the knockouts, sixteen more before the quarter-finals, and four before the final whistle in New Jersey. Most pre-tournament rankings just list the obvious favourites and stop. This one ranks every nation — even the ones nobody is talking about — because the new 48-team format means upsets are more likely than ever, and you should know who can pull one off.

→ Six tiers. Forty-eight teams. One trophy.

Tier S — Genuine Title Contenders

Five teams enter the tournament with a legitimate, statistically-backed path to lifting the trophy at MetLife Stadium. They have the depth, the manager, the form, and the spine to win five knockout matches in 22 days. Anything else from this group counts as a disappointment.

SGenuine Title Contenders5 teams · path to the trophy
🇦🇷ArgentinaDefending champions, the most settled squad of any contender, Messi's final dance. Group J is the kindest draw of any top seed. Pre-tournament favourites in nearly every model.
🇫🇷France2022 finalists with Mbappé in peak years, Camavinga, Tchouaméni, and the deepest forward depth at the tournament. Deschamps' template is proven.
🇪🇸SpainEuro 2024 champions. Yamal, Pedri, Rodri, Lamine — the most technically gifted midfield in the world. Group H with Uruguay is a real test, but anything below the semis surprises.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿EnglandBellingham + Saka + Kane + Foden + Rice — golden generation in peak years. Tuchel's defensive structure addresses the biggest tournament weakness.
🇧🇷BrazilVinicius, Rodrygo, Endrick attack. Casemiro anchor. Real test is whether Dorival Júnior's structure can survive against top European pressing sides.

Tier A — Realistic Semi-Finalists

Seven teams with the talent to reach the final four. Each has one or two weaknesses that could be exposed by a Tier S side — but on form, the road to the semi-finals is genuinely open.

How These Rankings Are Built

Six factors determine where each team sits. We weight current form (last 12 months) higher than historical pedigree, because tournament football rewards what is happening right now more than what happened in the last cycle.

The six factors

1. Squad depth. Five knockout games in 22 days. Bench needs to be playable. Argentina, France, England, Spain win this metric.

2. Manager tournament record. Scaloni (2 Copa Americas + 1 WC), Deschamps (1 WC + 1 Euros final), De la Fuente (1 Euros), Tuchel (no tournament). Brazil and Portugal carry tournament-experience question marks here.

3. Form in qualifying / friendlies. Argentina + Spain + France lost almost nothing in the last 18 months. Germany and Brazil dropped surprising results that hurt their floor.

4. Defensive solidity. Modern World Cups are won by sides that concede less than 1 goal per knockout match. Argentina, Spain, England, Croatia all hit this benchmark.

5. Goalkeeping. Emi Martínez, Diogo Costa, Mike Maignan, Donnarumma — top tier separates Tier S from Tier A in tight knockouts.

6. The draw. Group J is the kindest for a top seed (Argentina). Group H is the toughest (Spain vs Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia vs Cape Verde). Group L offers England a genuinely tough Croatia rematch.

FIFA 2026 Power Rankings — Frequently Asked Questions

Argentina enter as defending champions and pre-tournament favourites in most major bookmakers' rankings, followed by France, Spain, England, Brazil and Germany. Portugal, Netherlands, and Belgium round out the Tier A contenders.
Morocco (2022 semi-finalists), Japan (golden generation in peak years), Uruguay (deep South American experience), and Croatia (still led by Modrić) are the most plausible dark horses. The new Round of 32 makes deep underdog runs significantly more likely than in previous tournaments.
Curaçao, with a population of approximately 150,000, is the smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. Cape Verde (population 600,000) is the second smallest. Both qualified for the first time in the expanded 48-team format.
The 48-team format introduces a new Round of 32 knockout stage, meaning the eight best third-placed teams from the group stage also advance. This makes early elimination less likely for mid-tier teams and creates more upset opportunities — but also means contenders play one extra knockout match before lifting the trophy.
